Lee Chang-yong, the governor of the Bank of Korea, said, "It is time for Korea to consider teaching one subject in English at school like some Southeast Asian countries."
In a special lecture invited by Sogang University's mentoring center, President Lee said that the biggest reason Koreans cannot rise to high positions in international organizations such as the IMF despite their outstanding abilities is their English proficiency, and that future generations need to help them fully expand their capabilities on the international stage.
President Lee said, "I personally think that if we teach Korean history in English, the younger generation will learn English and promote our proud history to foreigners."
