"Fertility rate, birth" is the highest in 9 years...National Statistical Office "Flow positive shift"

By September this year, the total fertility rate and the number of births reached a nine-year high.

The National Statistical Office reported that the total fertility rate in the third quarter of this year was 0.76, up 0.05 from the same period a year ago.

As a result, the total fertility rate increased for two consecutive quarters, following 0.71 in the second quarter.

The number of births in the third quarter was 61,288, up 4,523 from a year ago and up 8%.

The number of babies born in September was 25,590, more than 20,000 for three consecutive months.

As a result, the total fertility rate was 0.74 in the first nine years of this year and the number of births was 178,600, the highest in nine years since 2015.

Statistics Korea said the birth statistics trend has turned positive and the annual total fertility rate is likely to be 0.74.

The Office for National Statistics initially predicted that the annual birth rate would fall below 0.70 this year to 0.68.

Statistics Korea analyzed that the number of marriages has increased significantly since August 2022, the increase in the number of women in their 30s, and the government's measures to support low birthrates have changed the flow of births.

The number of marriages in the third quarter was 51,706, up 10,3 and 24%, the largest increase since statistics were compiled in 1981.

From January to September, the number of cumulative marriages increased 12.8% to 161,771, the highest increase since related statistics.

The number of marriages in September was 15,368, an increase of 2,428 and 18.8%.
