◆ Reporter Cho Tae-hyun (hereinafter referred to as Cho Tae-hyun): It's a week to look at the vivid price information of traditional markets and hypermarkets to see what the most delicious and cheap seasonal food is. Today, I'm with Won Ji-sun of the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation. Hello, assistant manager.
◇ Mr. Won Ji-sun of the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation (hereinafter referred to as Won Ji-sun): Hello.
◆ Cho Tae-hyun: Christmas is just around the corner. I'm curious about the news of agricultural products around this time, so please introduce the price information of agricultural products that you will know this week.
◇ Won Ji-sun: Yes. This week, radishes, shine muscat, and strawberries were cheap. Winter radishes are good for preventing colds during the change of seasons, and they are also called ginseng from the field. As the kimchi-making season ends, consumption has decreased. Prices are on the decline as winter shipments from Jeju have begun in earnest. Non-retail prices traded about 9% lower, from 3,542 won per unit last week to 3,195 won this week. Shine Muscat saw prices fall due to increased volumes brought into the market, with shipments up 8.2% year-over-year in December. Shine Muscat is 16,374 won per 2kg, down about 6% from last week. Strawberries come from one stem and after they are harvested, flowers bloom on the new stem and replace the fruit-bearing studio. The first episode strawberry with the longest boiling is the best. This is also why winter strawberries taste better than spring strawberries. I think it is characterized by being exceptionally large and high in sugar this year. There were also abnormal climate effects such as heat waves, and the price was somewhat high because it was in the early stages of shipment. Currently, the harvest volume has been on the decline since last week due to the recovery of the crop. It was traded about 8% cheaper last week, from 2,879 won to 2,654 won per 100 grams. The peculiar thing is that strawberries are usually traded at a higher price than for baking. Thanks to the demand for cakes ahead of Christmas, strawberries for baking processing seem to be traded at some higher prices than raw fruits.
◆ Cho Tae-hyun: Which items have increased in price?
◇ Won Ji-seon: Yes, the items that went up this week are cabbage, spinach, and citrus. In the case of cabbage, the initial shipment price is on the rise as shipments decreased compared to the previous year, when the initial crop was very good, and it was traded at 4,300 won per head, up about 5% from last week. This year, the crop of winter cabbage is said to be good. Production is also expected to increase year-on-year, so we think prices will show a downward trend in the future. Prices rose due to a delay in growth due to poor weather conditions in Gyeongnam, the winter main destination of Cheongyang peppers. It was trading at 1,357 won per 100 grams, up about 5.4% from last week.
◆ Cho Tae-hyun: In winter, it's actually fun to eat tangerines. What was the trend in citrus prices?
◇ Won Ji-seon: Yes, I heard a lot recently that tangerine prices are high. Citrus rose slightly from 4,189 won to 4,243 won on a 10-day basis. Citrus is planning to increase its market volume by revising local government ordinances, such as easing coloring standards in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. In addition, the government plans to make efforts to reduce the burden on consumers by promoting discount events at large supermarkets. This summer's heat wave and heavy rain affected the cabbage crop, so we conducted a campaign to delay kimchi. Thanks to this, consumers were able to purchase high-quality cabbage at a reasonable price, and producers were able to sell good cabbage in a timely manner without harvesting early. The tangerine is also a little late, but I hope that the crop will recover and I will be able to spend this winter with tangerines again.
◆ Cho Tae-hyun: You mentioned that the citrus crop is on the decline as it gradually improves, but especially citrus, the government and local governments are working to reduce the burden on consumers, so you can look forward to it. Anyway, are you worried about the news of African swine fever these days?
◇ Won Ji-sun: Yes, African swine fever was confirmed on December 16 at a pig farm in Yangju, Gyeonggi-do, and humans and other animals are not infected and are highly contagious only to animals belonging to the pig family. Not only does it cause tremendous damage to the pig industry, but it also affects our pocket situation. However, these days, quarantine policies are more stringent than before. It is said that they have already started emergency quarantine measures. In addition, the impact of this swine fever outbreak on domestic pork supply and demand is insignificant. It is said that quarantine measures such as hygiene and disinfection management and access restrictions will continue in the future. You don't have to worry too much.
◆ Cho Tae-hyun: Lastly, please introduce seasonal agricultural products!
◇ Won Ji-sun: The seasonal agricultural product I'm going to recommend this time is 'pork potatoes'. It is said that 'pork potatoes' have been nicknamed 'fat' in size and weight, as well as shape, from long to bumpy. These days, when the cold weather continues, it keeps shrinking. I would like to introduce 'Pig Potatoes' today to you in the midst of the season, which is said to help your health in many ways at this time. In Korea, 'pork potatoes' can be harvested from October to March of the following year. Now, long after December, it is in season to eat freshly harvested pork potatoes. Pork potatoes contain inulin, about 75 times that of regular potatoes. Inulin is a water-soluble dietary fiber that helps improve cholesterol while raising blood sugar less after meals. In addition, it is said to be good for intestinal activity with abundant dietary fiber, so it is a really good food in winter when activity decreases. You can dry pork potatoes and eat them for tea, or you can try braised pork potatoes that have a sweet and salty taste and a chewy texture with only pork potatoes, soy sauce, sugar, and oligosaccharides.
◆ Cho Tae-hyun: This has been Won Ji-sun, deputy manager of the Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation. Thank you for the good information today as well.
◇ Won Ji-sun: Yes, thank you.
