More than nine out of 10 large unions with more than 1,000 members have completed their accounting disclosures this year.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor said that 90.9% or 666 out of 733 unions and affiliated organizations with more than 1,000 union members who are subject to disclosure have completed their financial year settlement disclosures last year.
The union accounting disclosure was introduced in October last year with the aim of increasing transparency in union operations, members and the public's right to know.
The disclosure itself is voluntary, but unions with more than 1,000 people cannot receive tax credits for union fees paid by members unless they participate in the disclosure.
277 out of 282 union members of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions participated in the disclosure, 281 out of 335 KCTU members participated in the disclosure, and the disclosure rate of other unions was 93.1%.
The two major labor unions have protested that the union accounting disclosure is a means of controlling the union, but they decided to participate in the accounting disclosure out of concern about the disadvantages of the union members.
The Ministry of Employment and Labor self-evaluated that the overall disclosure rate was more than 90% following the previous year, despite some unions' refusal to disclose accounting.
