Environment Secretary "Reducing Plastic..."It's hard to set a quantitative goal".

2024.11.25 PM 06:07
Environment Minister Kim Wan-seop attended an international agreement to end plastic pollution and stressed the need to move toward reducing plastic production.

At a press conference of the 5th Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee to draft legally binding international documents on plastic pollution, Minister Kim said recycling should be done faithfully, but we should move toward reducing production.

However, it is unlikely that a "quantitative" goal will be created to reduce plastic raw materials extracted from fossil fuels by a certain amount until a specific year.

Minister Kim said it is practically difficult to reach an agreement if negotiated with numbers, and the government suggested the international community list unnecessary plastics such as disposable ones in separate protocols.

He added that as the host of the fifth negotiating committee, he is working to draft the agreement and will submit the results to the chairman of the negotiating committee after discussing with representatives from countries that held the first to fourth negotiating committees, including Uruguay, France, Kenya and Canada.
