Prosecutors sentence Kim Nam-guk to six months in prison for 'reporting false property'

Prosecutors have demanded a prison sentence for former Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Nam-guk, who was put on trial for falsely reporting his assets to the National Assembly to hide his possession of 10 billion virtual assets.

In a final hearing held at the Seoul Southern District Court, prosecutors demanded a six-month prison term, saying former lawmaker Kim interfered with the work of the National Assembly's Public Official Ethics Committee by hiding the possession of large deposits on the virtual asset exchange.

Former lawmaker Kim pleaded not guilty, saying that simple non-reporting is not subject to punishment because coin deposits were not subject to reporting.

Former lawmaker Kim is accused of omitting his property report by purchasing more than 10 billion won in deposits at the virtual asset exchange with coins just before reporting the assets of lawmakers in 2021 and 2022.

Sentencing is scheduled for February 10 next year.
