"The remains of buildings in Gaza, 11 times the size of Egypt's evacuation Ramid"

Analysis shows that the amount of rubble of buildings in Gaza, which has been devastated by Israeli attacks over the past year, is 11 times as large as Egypt's evacuation pyramid.

UN officials have estimated the size of the rubble of buildings piled up in Gaza at least 42 million tons, according to Reuters.

According to U.N. satellite imagery, 163,000 buildings, two-thirds of which were in Gaza before the war broke out in October last year, were damaged or collapsed.

About a third of them were high-rise buildings.

U.N. officials have spent at least $1.2 billion over 14 years cleaning up such a huge amount of building debris. It is expected to cost 1.6 trillion won.

The U.N.-led debris management working group will immediately begin clearing debris from roadside buildings in Canunis in southern Gaza and Deir el-Bala in central Gaza from this month.

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) cleared more than 3 million tons of debris from Gaza in cooperation with countries around the world even when Hamas and Israel fought a month-long war in 2014.

But it remains to be seen whether the debris removal process will go smoothly, as there is a risk of being caught up in Israeli attacks targeting Hamas members hiding among civilians and as many as 10,000 bodies could not be recovered under the rubble.

In addition, it is estimated that 2.3 million tons of debris are contaminated with asbestos, a carcinogen.
