Japan's Atomic Bomb Victims Council and "Nihon Hidankyo" have been selected as the winners of this year's Nobel Peace Prize, but many groups of atomic bomb victims are at risk of survival due to aging, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported.

Eleven prefectural exposure groups, including Nara Prefecture and Tochigi Prefecture, have already disbanded or suspended their activities, and the Hokkaido Exposure Protectors Association will disband in March next year.

As of the end of March, there were 106,000 people who were exposed to medical expenses supported by the Japanese government, down 86,000 from 10 years ago, and the average age reached 85.6.

"The risk of using nuclear weapons has increased due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and we hope that the second and third generations of nuclear weapons and volunteers will continue their campaigns," said Kido Sueichi, director of the Hidankyo bureau.

Founded in 1965, Nippon Hidankyo is a national organization joined by regional atomic bomb victims groups in Japan and has been campaigning against nuclear weapons.
