A bill has been proposed to ban mobile phones in schools in the UK, the BBC reported.

The British government earlier this year issued guidelines to schools to ban or restrict the use of mobile phones in schools, with Labour MP Josh McCallister putting a "safer phone bill" in the Commons, calling for such guidelines to be enacted into law altogether.

"There is increasing evidence that spending hours a day searching for negative news causes widespread harm," said Representative McKelister. "We need legislation to fasten seatbelts for children's use of social media."

The bill calls for all schools to be in a "cell phone-free zone."

In addition, the age at which online companies such as SNS can obtain consent from children without parental permission has been raised from the current age of 13 to 16.

At the same time, it included strengthening the regulatory authority of online companies to prevent children from being exposed to apps or services that are prone to addiction.

Although it is rare for a bill initiated by a member of the government not to be passed at the government level, it is drawing attention whether the bill will be passed or not as there are growing voices calling for restrictions on children's smartphone use.
