U.S. calls for pressure on China to 'withdraw North Korean troops'

The U.S. expects China to exert influence over the withdrawal of North Korean troops sent to help Russia fight Ukraine.

CNN reported on the 29th local time that the US government is persuading China to "put pressure on North Korea."

It is said that the U.S. has conveyed its concerns to China about the ripple effects of North Korea's dispatch of troops on the war in Ukraine and the international situation.

In particular, the U.S. is said to have asked other countries in the international community to persuade China to move.

To that end, U.S. government officials say National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan recently gave instructions to authorities concerned.

In this regard, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said, "We have clearly conveyed U.S. concerns about sending North Korea to China," and stressed, "Neighbor China should also be concerned about Russia and North Korea's unstable behavior."

However, there are many negative prospects about whether China will actually influence North Korea.

NATO members say China is outwardly neutral on the war in Ukraine but will not intervene in the issue of sending North Korean troops, citing behind-the-scenes support for Russia.

It is also unclear how effective China's influence will be as North Korea and Russia are rapidly approaching each other, including the recent signing of a "Treaty on Comprehensive Strategic Partnership," including military cooperation.
