Ten people were killed when the volcano in Indonesia's eastern Sosunda Islands erupted several times.
Indonesia's Disaster Management Authority announced that the Lewatobi Rakiraki volcano in eastern Flores Island, East Nusatengara, began erupting last week and erupted several times at night on the 3rd and early in the morning of the 4th.
The eruption caused ash to soar 2km above the crater, and hot, dark brown ash hit nearby villages.
The disaster management agency said it has burned several houses and killed 10 people so far.
The Indonesian government has raised the volcanic alert to the highest level, Level 4.
Residents of five villages near the volcano were evacuated and people were banned from approaching within a 7-kilometer radius of the crater.Indonesia, which is in the Pacific Rim midwifery called the
'Ring of Fire', has about 120 active volcanoes alone.
The Lewatobi Rakiraki volcano erupted on December 23 last year for the first time in 20 years and continued to erupt until early this year, evacuating more than 2,000 residents.
