A ship sank near the Greek island of Samos, killing six children and two women, the Greek coast guard said.

The Korea Coast Guard said eight people were killed and 39 rescued when a ship full of migrants sank on the 25th local time, explaining that it is aware of the exact number and nationality of those on board.

The Coast Guard said it mobilized submersibles, lifeboats and helicopters to search for the missing.

Samos and other islands in Greece's eastern Aegean Sea serve as important stopovers for migrants illegally migrating to the European Union through the Turkish coast.

An increasing number of ships carrying illegal migrants have been in recent months, which Greek authorities attribute to ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

The Coast Guard added that on the same day, 27 migrants aboard another ship arrived in Greece and disembarked, killing an elderly man.

According to the United Nations, more than 54,000 people entered Greece illegally this year.

It mainly comes by boat from Turkey, but recently, the number of smuggling across the Mediterranean Sea from Libya and other countries has been increasing.

The largest number of people arriving in Greece this year via the Mediterranean Sea were Syrians, Afghans and Egyptians, according to Frontex, Europe's border coastal operator.
