Foreign media reported that Chinese Defense Minister Dongjun is being investigated for corruption.
The Financial Times (FT) quoted former and current U.S. officials as saying.
It added that it was not known what the corruption allegations were specifically, and that the Chinese embassy in the United States declined to comment.
Only a week ago, Dong attended the 11th ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) expanded defense ministers' meeting in Laos.
Following former Defense Minister Ri Sang-fu, who was dropped on corruption charges, he was appointed as Defense Minister at the end of December last year and has not served a year in office.
If Dong's investigation into corruption allegations is true, all three former and current defense chiefs will be investigated for corruption, following Lee and his predecessor Wei Fenghe.
