Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who was sentenced to prison on corruption charges, was also convicted by the French Supreme Court.

France's highest court, the Court of Cassation, said today (18th) that it will confirm a first trial ruling that sentenced former President Sarkozy to one year in prison on charges of corruption and illegal influence.

The court of cassation sentenced him to one year in prison but ruled that he should be placed under house arrest while wearing an electronic bracelet.

This is the first time such a sentence has been given to a former French president.

In the case of a prison sentence of up to two years, the accused may choose house arrest under the condition of attaching an electronic bracelet instead of being imprisoned.

Sarkozy's lawyer said he would follow the policy of wearing an electronic bracelet, but said he planned to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights, saying he would continue to fight to prove his innocence.

Former President Sarkozy has pleaded completely innocent on his SNS account, saying he cannot accept the unfair ruling.

Sarkozy, who served between 2007 and 2012, was accused of raising illegal campaign funds when he ran for re-election in 2012, and has strongly denied the allegations.
