background
In the eastern German city of Magdeburg, a car drove into a Christmas market yesterday afternoon local time, causing dozens of casualties.

Local media, citing police and rescue authorities, said at least two people were killed and 68 injured, 15 of whom were seriously injured.

Police say the vehicle cut through a narrow passage between stands and sped at a high speed of more than 400 meters.Authorities in

state have arrested the driver and say it is believed to be a deliberate attack.

Prime Minister Hazelov said the suspect was a 50-year-old man from Saudi Arabia who was a doctor who settled in Germany in 2006 and explained that it appeared to be the sole crime committed by driving a rental car.

In Germany, 13 people were killed and more than 60 injured when a truck rushed to a Christmas market set up in central Berlin in 2016.

The suspect, identified as an Islamic extremist, was killed four days later after a gunfight with police in Italy.

Germany's Interior Ministry said late last month that there were no specific signs of danger to this year's Christmas market, but it urged people to remain vigilant.
