Ukraine has launched a drone strike on Kazan, the Republic of Tatarstan, about 1,000 kilometers from Russia's frontline, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that Ukrainian aircraft-type drones attacked civilian facilities in Kazan three times from 7:40 a.m. to 9:20 a.m. local time on the 21st.

Kazan is about 1,000 kilometers inland from the front lines of Russia and Ukraine and 800 kilometers east of the Russian capital Moscow.

"Ukraine has brought war to the heart of Russia," the Associated Press said.

The head of the Republic of Tatarstan said in a statement that Kazan had been attacked by eight drones, one aimed at industrial facilities, six at residential buildings and one was shot down on the river.

Workers at industrial facilities were evacuated, and no casualties were reported, it added.

However, a fire broke out in residential buildings and high-rise buildings that were attacked by drones, and fire suppression operations were carried out.

Russia's Federal Aviation Transportation Authority said earlier in the day that temporary restrictions had been introduced at Kazan airport for security reasons and all flights were suspended.

Kazan authorities announced the cancellation of all public events for two days over the weekend for safety.
