The long scorching heat has passed and it has finally become clear autumn weather, but another uninvited guest has come.

It's 'morning fog', which is also the cause of the increase in traffic accidents at this time of the year.Reporter Kim Min-kyung reports on the characteristics of autumn fog that are different from spring and winter

As the sun goes down and darkness thickens, a fog creeps up on the ground.

The overnight fog continues until the morning when the sun rises.

The bowl in which the air can hold water vapor gets bigger as the temperature increases.

In comparison, the temperature rises during the day, and the bowl grows like a basin, and when the temperature drops at night, it becomes as small as a rice bowl.

It is fog that water vapor cannot be contained in a small bowl and floats as water droplets in the air.

Autumn fog occurs mainly inland, and in severe places such as around rivers, it is so thick that you can't see well in front of 200m.

[Cong Sang-min / Meteorological Agency forecaster: (Recently) the temperature is about 10 to 25 degrees Celsius across the country as the daily temperature range has widened by more than 10 degrees Celsius.... As the temperature drops, the water vapor near the surface becomes saturated, causing fog. Fog will occur mainly inland.]

Fog is also an ambush in spring and winter, and the place and cause of occurrence are different from autumn.

The heated land cools at night and fogs inland, and warm air passes through the cold sea level in the sea, creating fog by a large temperature difference.

At night, the land becomes colder, and the wind blows toward the sea, so it appears prominently around the west coast where the two fogs meet.

In other words, it is mostly foggy inland in autumn,

In spring and winter, thick fog is created not only on land but also on the sea.

It is especially dangerous because traffic accidents can increase during foggy periods inland.

[Woo Jin-gyu / Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) In the fall, special attention is required for traffic safety, such as driving a vehicle, as thick fog may occur inland, especially on roads adjacent to rivers, lakes, or valleys.]

Most of the large-scale vehicle chain crashes, including the 106 type crash on Yeongjong Bridge in 2015, were caused by "fogging."
