Next year, the areas subject to heavy rain emergency disaster texts will be expanded.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said in a parliamentary audit of the National Assembly's Environment and Labor Committee today (11th) that it will increase two to three more areas where heavy rain emergency disaster messages were operated, which were limited to the Seoul metropolitan area, North Gyeongsang Province, and South Jeolla Province, and gradually expand them nationwide.

Heavy rain emergency disaster texts were regularly operated in the Seoul metropolitan area and piloted in Gyeongbuk and Jeonnam this year, and a total of 129 cases were sent.

'Heavy rain emergency text' is a disaster text sent directly by the Korea Meteorological Administration, and 50mm per hour and 90mm per hour are met at the same time, or if more than 72mm of heavy rain falls per hour, it is immediately sent to each town, village, and dong.

In addition, the Korea Meteorological Administration plans to calculate a "composite extreme climate index" in consideration of the simultaneous occurrence of several extreme phenomena such as heavy rain and heat waves.

On the 11th of last month, an unusual event occurred in Buan, Jeollabuk-do, where the new records of "September 1 hour precipitation" and "September 1st maximum temperature" were broken at the same time.
