A couple who intentionally hit a vehicle that broke traffic laws and pocketed hundreds of millions of dollars in insurance money were sentenced to prison.

The Jeonju District Court sentenced her husband, 51-year-old A, and his wife, 45-year-old B, to eight months and six months in prison, respectively, on charges of violating the Special Act on Insurance Fraud Prevention.

The couple burned 120 million won in insurance money nine times from September 2018 to June 2022 by intentionally causing an accident if they found a vehicle that did not follow the lane or violated traffic laws.

The court explained that insurance fraud is a socially harmful crime that transfers the economic burden to good subscribers, and that the sentencing reflected the fact that the couple were sentenced to two years and eight months in prison last year for another insurance fraud.
