Chinese university graduates are increasingly choosing "slow employment" such as civil service exams and graduate school entrance amid a job shortage.

According to a report by Chinese online recruitment platform Zrian Zhaofin, the percentage of choosing "slow employment" rose to 19.1% in 2024 from 13.1% in 2021, while the percentage of going to graduate school also rose to 6.5% this year from 4.9% last year.

Youth unemployment has been compounded by an all-time high of 11.79 million graduates in 2023 and a slump in the job market.

Government statistics showed the unemployment rate of between 16 and 24 years old at 17.1%, but experts estimate it will actually be higher.

The reduction in corporate hiring and the avoidance of low-paying jobs are reducing many graduates to "full-time children" who return to their hometowns and rely on their parents, or "poor children" who make ends meet on temporary jobs.

Experts say industrial restructuring and declining employment in traditional industries are worsening employment difficulties, and advised the government and businesses to support college graduates in employment and expand job supply.
