Japan's current account surplus rose sharply in August from a year ago, the highest monthly figure ever.

According to the balance of payments statistics published by Japan's Ministry of Finance, the current account surplus in August was 8.336 trillion yen, up 65.8% from the same month last year.

This is the largest since 1985 when there are comparable statistics.

Kyodo News said the expansion of the current account surplus was driven by income balances such as dividends and interest from overseas investments amid the reduced trade and service deficit.

This marks the 19th consecutive month that Japan's current account balance has been in the black.
