Seongnam City signed a business agreement with the Seongnam Office of Education and Bundang Central High School today (8th) at City Hall to attract and operate Seongnam at science high schools.

Under the agreement, the three organizations decided to establish a cooperation system in the administrative and financial sectors to apply for a public offering for the establishment of a science high school promoted by the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education.

Seongnam City and Seongnam Office of Education have been reviewing the idle site for the establishment of the school and the method of converting Bundang Central High School to science high schools at the integrated working-level consultative body for attracting science high schools.

In the case of the new school system, after reviewing the idle site in the building, it was found that dormitories and research buildings lacked the site area to establish essential science high schools.

Bundang Jungang High School, which has been operating as a science-focused school since 2009, is preparing to submit a public offering in cooperation with the city by announcing its intention to switch to a science high school based on its long-standing know-how in math and science curriculum organization and excellent teachers.

Mayor Shin Sang-jin said at the business agreement ceremony, "We will actively communicate between the three parties and make all-out efforts to write a public offering for Gyeonggi Science High School for the rest of the year."

The provincial education office plans to preliminarily designate a science high school at the end of November after receiving applications to attract science high schools in early November and evaluating them by a separate screening committee.

If it is preliminarily designated, it will be opened after deliberation by the provincial education office's special purpose high school designation and operation committee, consent from the education minister, and designation and examination of the Gyeonggi-do superintendent of education.

The goal is to open a science high school in March 2027 and a new science high school in March 2030.

Currently, Gyeonggi Buk Science High School, which opened in Uijeongbu City in 2005, is the only science high school in Gyeonggi Province.

Seongnam, Goyang, Icheon, Bucheon, Gwangmyeong, Ansan, Yongin, Pyeongtaek, Siheung, Gunpo, and Gwacheon are 12 local governments in the province that have announced their intention to attract new science high schools.
