The U.N. General Assembly elected South Korea as a member of the U.N. Human Rights Council for a three-year term in an election held at the U.N. headquarters in New York on the 9th local time.

Launched in 2006, the United Nations Human Rights Council is responsible for promoting human rights and basic freedoms in the international community, coping with and recommending serious human rights violations.

In this year's election, six countries, including South Korea, Cyprus, the Marshall Islands, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Thailand, applied for new board members, while five countries, excluding Saudi Arabia, were elected.

The U.N. Human Rights Council consists of 47 members, which are replaced by a third every year by anonymous votes from 193 U.N. member states.

Earlier in 2022, Korea tried to win a second term in an election over four vacancies in the Asia-Pacific region, but failed in fifth place.
