The "Battery Certification System," which was proposed as a safety measure after the fire of an electric vehicle in Cheongna, Incheon, in August, will begin a trial operation this month.

The government is planning to test and verify battery stability, and attention is being paid to whether it will be able to quell citizens' anxiety about increased electric vehicles.

Reporter Park Ki-wan reports.

Place the battery pack to be mounted on the electric vehicle on top of the test device and shake it,

Dropping from a high place,

Put into flames to test if they don't spread to greater danger.

After the fire in Cheongna Electric Vehicle in Incheon in August, fears about electric vehicles did not subside,
The
government has decided to implement a system early to test and guarantee the safety of electric vehicle batteries.

[Baek Won-guk / Second Vice Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport: We could not afford to wait until next year in a situation where we were worried about electric vehicle fires. So, from the 15th, it will be implemented early in the form of a pilot project.]

'Battery Safety Certification System' refers to a pre-certification system that requires electric vehicle batteries to be tested for safety before they are released.

Manufacturers must pass 12 safety tests, including overheating, overcharging and short circuits, to market batteries,
You must still take a conformity test after
.

It is originally scheduled to be implemented in February next year, but we have advanced the schedule to eliminate consumer anxiety and settle the system stably.

Five companies, including Hyundai Motor, Kia, and LG Energy Solution, will participate in the pilot project to be the first test of safety certification.

Hyundai Motor and Kia's follow-up electric vehicle models are expected to be the first to be verified for government safety and become certified electric vehicles.

The battery safety certification system will be implemented from February next year, but it will be mandatory in 2026 after a one-year grace period.

In addition, the government has also decided to come up with measures to strengthen the battery history system and BMS safety functions, and attention is being paid to how much anxiety in the market can be quelled.
