"You have to be lucky to have one meal a day"...the worst hunger crisis in southern Africa

Southern Africa, which has suffered a severe drought due to the El Nino phenomenon, has faced its worst hunger crisis, the U.N. World Food Program, the WFP, says.

The WFP said in a statement that children in southern Africa are only able to eat one meal a day if they are lucky, and that more than 20 million children are estimated to be malnourished.

He also expressed concern that the food crisis is likely to worsen by March-April next year, the harvest season.

Currently, five countries in southern Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Zambia, have declared a state of national disaster due to drought-induced food shortages.

In addition, large-scale power outages are occurring in Zambia and Zimbabwe, which rely on hydropower because the water level of large dams is so low.

Namibia and Zimbabwe have also allowed hunting of wild animals, including elephants, to provide meat to hungry residents.
