It turns out that 40% of accidents caused by incorrectly pedaling cars are caused by older people.

Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance's Traffic Safety and Culture Research Institute announced today (16th) the results of the analysis of the characteristics of pedaling accidents.

As a result of analyzing the accidents of Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance cars from 2019 to June this year, there were more than 160 cases of pedal malfunction per month, with an average of 2,000 cases per year.

By age, related accidents increased sharply from the age of 61, accounting for 39.1% of all pedal malfunction accidents.

Specifically, 25.7% of those aged 65 or older and 14.6% of those aged 70 or older were analyzed.

In particular, those aged 70 or older accounted for only 5.9% of all driver's license holders, so the risk of accidents was 2.5 times higher in terms of share.

The institute explained that even if you have a long driving experience, the older you are, the slower your response speed, which increases the risk of accidents.

In response, he stressed the need to make it mandatory to install devices that detect and block erroneous manipulations and distribute them.

To this end, it is necessary to quickly introduce mandatory pedal malfunction prevention devices for new vehicles.

He also urged the development of products that can be mounted on existing vehicles and the establishment of purchase support policies to expand distribution.

Currently, there is no pedal malfunction prevention device in Korea that can be attached to existing vehicles.

Hyundai Motor's Casper EV is the only vehicle sold with the device.
