The Ministry of Education refuted the request by the Korea Institute of Medical Education and Evaluation yesterday (16th) to push for a revision of the evaluation and certification regulations of higher education institutions, saying it is a necessary measure to secure accountability of accredited institutions.

The Ministry of Education criticized that the independence and autonomy of accredited institutions should be respected, but that the council's opposition to the revision and insisting on canceling the policy to increase medical schools is an act that is too biased toward doctors regardless of fair evaluation accountability.

He also stressed that in the case of the establishment of special cases for evaluation and certification of medical courses, when academic operations are not normal in a large-scale disaster situation and educational conditions are deteriorated, a complementary period of about a year will minimize disadvantages to universities and students and ensure that medical personnel are nurtured.

Earlier, the council insisted on withdrawing the amendment announced by the Ministry of Education, saying it would undermine the independence and autonomy of medical school evaluation and certification agencies and hinder normal operation, negatively affecting the quality of medical personnel.
