U.S. private space company Exium Space has unveiled a new space suit made in collaboration with Italian luxury brand Prada. Women and astronauts of color, who will be the first human to land on the moon, are expected to wear the spacesuit.
The spacesuit, unveiled at the 'International Space Congress 2024' held in Milan, Italy, on the 16th local time, will be used on NASA's 'Artemis 3' moon mission, which aims to be September 2026.
Axiom Space, headquartered in Houston, Texas, won NASA's space suit replacement and modernization project in 2022, and selected Prada as a space suit maker. It is explained that Prada has excellent expertise in making and handling materials and decided that it would make the spacesuit more comfortable.
Prada's space suit, which was recently unveiled, was designed in white overall, and highlighted its forearms, waist, and "portable life system backpack" in red, reminiscent of Prada's sub-brand Linea Rosa.

It has also improved the performance of spacesuits with innovative functions. The boots are specially designed to allow at least eight hours of spacewalking per day, and the spacesuit is made of white material that can reflect heat to protect the body from extremely high temperatures and moon dust.Lorenzo Bertelli, chief marketing officer at
Prada Group, said he had been discussing the collaboration since before the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in 2020. It is rumored that about 10 Prada employees participated in the space suit production between Milan and Houston.
NASA's Artemis III mission, scheduled for the second half of 2026, will be the first moon landing in about 54 years since Apollo 17 in 1972. If the project is successful, it will be the first woman and person of color to walk on the moon in human history.
