Russia has emphasized that it "does not care about the outcome" of the U.S. presidential election.
"Russia doesn't care about the outcome of this election," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mariya Zakharova said in a statement released on the country's foreign ministry website on May 5 local time, noting that there is a bipartisan agreement in the United States to confront our country.
Zakharova made the comment in the form of answering the question, "In the West and Ukraine, Russia claims to want a victory for former U.S. President Donald Trump, and does Russia support a specific candidate?"
During the presidential election, former President Trump has repeatedly vowed to quickly end the Ukraine conflict if he is elected.
"If there is any change in U.S. politics and it is offered to us, we will be ready to study whether it is in Russian interest," Zakharova said, stressing that "we will defend our interests, especially on matters of national security."
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also said of a possible change in relations between Moscow and Washington after the U.S. presidential election, saying, "The anti-Russian and Russian-hating tendencies of U.S. policy are based on internal political consensus, which has a bipartisan nature."
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also told local media that "Russia does not care about the outcome of the U.S. presidential election," adding, "It does not matter."
