The police investigated the situation in which a woman who raised her young daughter alone took her own life after suffering from bullying by illegal loan sharks.
The Jongam Police Station in Seoul said it is investigating a woman in her 30s who passed away in September, believing that she had been illegally collected by loan sharks.
According to the YTN report, Mr. A, who borrowed hundreds of thousands of won from private lenders, seems to have increased his debt by more than 10 million won in less than a month due to interest rates reaching thousands of percent per annum.
It has been confirmed that loan sharks sent hundreds of texts a day containing swear words and insults to family and acquaintances when A failed to pay back the money on time.
They distributed threatening messages including family photos as well as kindergarten and home addresses where their daughter attends, and it was found that they also called a kindergarten teacher where A's 6-year-old daughter attends and threatened to go meet her child.
In a suicide note left to his daughter before he died, Mr. A expressed his affection and sorry, saying, "If there is a next life even after death, I love you in the next life, my baby, I love you."
He also left notes with loan sharks who borrowed money and wrote down the amount.
The police, who have launched a formal investigation into high-interest illegal loans and collections against Mr. A, are tracking loan sharks based on statements made by those involved and the flow of funds.
