The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs announced that the remains of Governor Lee Eui-kyung, the author of "The Amnok River Flows," which was written against the backdrop of the historical transformation from the late Joseon Dynasty to the colonial era, will be returned to his homeland for the first time in 105 years on the 16th.
Born in Haeju, Hwanghae Province, in 1899, Governor Lee Eui-kyung participated in the March 1st Movement in 1919 and then served as editor-in-chief when the Korean Youth Diplomacy Group was formed for independence diplomacy in May of the same year.
Governor Lee, who went to Germany through France in 1920, participated in the "World Anti-Pressure National Resolution Conference" held in Belgium while attending the University of Munich in Germany in 1927 and announced his country's will to independence.
Governor Lee later died of stomach cancer in March 1950, and was buried at the Graffeling Cemetery in Bavaria, Germany.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs announced that Governor Lee's remains will arrive at Incheon International Airport on the 16th (Saturday) and hold a memorial service, and then enter a morgue at Daejeon National Cemetery on the 17th (Sunday), the day of patriotic martyrs for the country.
Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs Kang Jeong-ae stressed that he will do his best to help Governor Lee die in the memory and respect of the people and take responsibility for the dedication to the country by bringing the last person of the independence fighters buried overseas to his home country.
