Russian investigators have launched an investigation into Ukraine-related terrorist incidents after a senior Russian naval officer was killed in a car explosion in Crimea, local media reported.

On the morning of the 13th local time, Sevastopol Mayor Mikhail Rajbozaev said on social media that a soldier was killed in a car explosion and that "the possibility of sabotage cannot be ruled out."

The 47-year-old colonel, chief of staff of the 41st Brigade of Black Sea Fleet Missile Ship, was killed when explosives attached to the bottom of the driver's side exploded remotely, local news channel Mash reported.

Russia's Federal Investigation Commission said "an investigation into terrorist attacks and illegal explosives trafficking has been launched" in connection with the incident, while AFP and other news agencies said Ukrainian security authorities coordinated the attack.

Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and has been conducting special military operations in eastern and southern Ukraine since February 2022.
