Four years after the "Uiho Lake ship capsized accident" in Chuncheon, Gangwon Province, where six people died, the prosecution sentenced Chuncheon City Hall officials and business officials to prison and imprisonment.

In a recent final trial held at the Chuncheon District Court, the prosecution demanded two years in prison for the director of Chuncheon City and the representative of the company at the time, asking for responsibility for the accident.

Six public officials from Chuncheon-related departments who were indicted together were asked for six months in prison for a short period of time and a year in prison for a long period of time, and each of Chuncheon-si and the company requested a fine of 1 billion won.

The defendants were put on trial for neglecting their duty of safety measures in connection with the Uiam Lake ship capsized in August 2020.

The first trial took place 21 months after the accident, and for the last two years or so, there has been a fierce legal battle over whether to order withdrawal before the accident and ownership of the aquatic island.

The Uiam Lake ship capsized accident was an accident in August 2020 when the floodgates of Uiam Dam opened during the rainy season and tried to prevent an artificial water plant island floating away.

At that time, eight people, including police officers, city hall officials and fixed-term city hall employees, fell into the water when three ships overturned, and two were rescued, but six people died, and one of the dead employees was never found.

The case sentencing hearing will be held on January 14 next year.
