In the past three years, 131 kindergartens in Gyeonggi Province have been closed and 372 have been closed.
According to Lee Ho-dong, a member of the Gyeonggi Provincial Council's Education Planning Committee, 25 public and 106 private kindergartens have been closed from 2022 to this year.
Closed kindergartens are counted as 264 public and 108 private kindergartens.
On the other hand, the number of English kindergartens increased by 46 (25%) from 186 in 2021 to 232 this year.
Lawmaker Lee called on the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education to review the public kindergarten management policy, saying, "It is an indicator of the weakening of the competitiveness of public kindergartens."
Representative Lee said, "The current classification criteria are the same as giving up the establishment of education infrastructure by making it difficult for public kindergartens to survive," adding, "Even if the number of students is small, public kindergartens should continue to play the role of public education."
Currently, the minimum number of infants per class in public kindergartens is five.
