A research team from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology and KAIST has identified the cause of the uneven spread that has not been solved for more than 160 years.

The theory of diffusion in a uniform environment was established by Einstein in 1905, but the cause of the non-diffusion classification of matter in a non-diffusion environment was not identified.

A research team led by Professor Kim Yong-jung of the Department of Mathematical Sciences and Professor Choi Myung-chul of the Department of Bio-Brain Engineering discovered through mathematical calculations and experiments that the diffusion theory, which Einstein described as "random behavior of molecules," applies even in uneven environments.

The research team explained that although there was only one coefficient in the existing diffusion law, it is divided into conductivity and mobility coefficients in a non-uniform environment, of which classification occurs due to mobility.

The research team said that the classification phenomenon was completely verified by the new diffusion law as a result of the experiment, and that there is no additional convection phenomenon that has been controversial for 160 years.
