U.S. President Biden has expressed his opposition to the attack on Iran's nuclear facilities, as Israel has signaled retaliation for Iran's massive missile strike.

The U.N. Security Council also called for both sides to stop fighting to ease tensions.

Journalists have asked President Biden related questions amid an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities as one of Israel's retaliatory scenarios.

[Joe Biden / U.S. President: (Do you support attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities?) My answer is no. G7 leaders also agree that Israel has the right to respond, but that it should respond proportionately to Iran.

At the U.N. Security Council, the U.S. and Russia fought a proxy war between Israel and Iran.

[Linda Thomas-Greenfield / U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations] The decision to fire nearly 200 missiles is not defensive by any means.]

[Vasily Nevenza / Russian Ambassador to the United Nations] It is Iran that has exercised particular restraint in the last two months (in response to Israeli provocations).]

Most Security Council members, including the U.N. secretary-general, have urged both Israel and Iran to refrain, saying further tensions should be prevented.

[Antonio Guterres / UN Secretary-General] Structural violence in violation of international humanitarian law should no longer be ignored. We need to stop this kind of violence in the eyes that call for death.]

Hwang Joon-guk, the ambassador to the United Nations, stressed that now is the time for the Security Council to prove its reason for existence and that a diplomatic solution should be found.

[Hwang Jun-guk / U.N. Ambassador: We must not remain passive in condemning. The Security Council must take significant steps to prevent the situation from falling deeper into the quagmire.]

President Biden and other G7 leaders also said in a statement after an emergency video conference that conflicts in the Middle East are not in anyone's interest and that diplomatic solutions are still possible.

The United States, which does not want further escalation, said it was discussing future responses with Israel, but stressed its intention to impose additional sanctions on Iran.
