At least 78 people were killed when a ship carrying 278 people sank in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa.

The number of victims is expected to increase further as the number of missing people has reached about 100, and this time, the overload is considered the cause of the accident.

Reporter Shin Woong-jin's report.

A ship that thought it was going to be okay with a full load of passengers

Slowly start tilting to one side.

I didn't think so, but it eventually sank and people who jumped out in a hurry floundered in the sea.

[Alexis Rehema / Accident survivor: The boat capsized and some people threw themselves into the water and started swimming. Others were stuck trapped in the boat. I can't remember how I was rescued because I've already lost consciousness.

At least 78 people were killed in the accident at Lake Kivu, on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda, the Associated Press reported, citing local authorities.

However, the number of bodies recovered at local hospitals has not been accurately counted, with 87 reported.

Once rescued, about 50 people were identified, and the rest were treated as missing.

The primary cause of the accident is considered excessive.

South Kivu Governor Zhangjac Purush said 278 people were on board the boat, which has a capacity of 30.The

dpa news agency quoted another official as saying about 700 people were aboard the ship and 126 bodies had been recovered.

[Bahati Selemani / Rescue Participant] We saw the boat start to turn upside down. I noticed that there were too many people on board and the waves were severe. The boat began to roll over little by little. The

accident vessel was en route from Minova, South Kivu to Goma, North Kivu.

Six people were killed and 64 went missing in April last year, despite frequent accidents caused by overloading on the course as the civil war blocked land traffic on the section.
