'Me Too' Weinstein Diagnoses Chronic Myeloid Leukemia

U.S. filmmaker Harvey Weinstein, who triggered the "Me Too" movement to accuse sexual violence, was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia, NBC News and other U.S. media reported on the 21st local time.

NBC, citing two sources, said Weinstein, who is being held at the Rikers Island jail in New York, has chronic myeloid leukemia, a type of bone cancer, and is receiving related treatment at the jail.

Weinstein's diagnosis of leukemia comes after news of his ill health in recent months.

Weinstein was taken to a nearby hospital last month for chest pain and underwent emergency heart surgery, and in July, she was hospitalized for COVID-19 and pneumonia.

Weinstein is awaiting a retrial after his conviction was overturned by the state Supreme Court in April after serving a 23-year prison sentence in 2020 for sexually assaulting an aspiring actress and a TV production assistant in New York State.

The New York State Supreme Court has ordered a new trial in the lower court, saying prosecutors made the mistake of witnessing women unrelated to Weinstein's direct charges.

Aside from the New York state trial, Weinstein is serving a 16-year prison sentence in California in 2022 for sexually assaulting five women in Beverly Hills between 2004 and 2013.

Weinstein became a Hollywood mogul in 1979 when he founded Miramax Studios, a film production and distribution company, with his brother Bob Weinstein, distributing "Good Will Hunting" and "Pulp Fiction".

However, it fell in 2017 after a series of reports and revelations that he had committed various sex crimes against women, including actors and employees, for more than 30 years.

Dozens of famous actors, including Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ashley Judd, revealed their damage to Weinstein at the time, sparking the Me Too movement around the world.
