Iraq says nine people have been killed, including the leaders of Islamic State and ISIS, an Islamic extremist terrorist group operating in the country.

Prime Minister Muhammad Sia al-Sudani said in a statement on Tuesday local time that his military counter-terrorism forces had killed ISIS leader Jasim al-Mazrui Abu Abdul Qader and eight other high-ranking ISIS officials in a military operation in a mountainous area of the Salahuddin region.

"There is no place for terrorists in Iraq," al-Sudani said, stressing that "we will trace them to ISIS hideouts and get rid of them."

"The operation was carried out with technical support and intelligence exchange from international allied forces," the Iraqi military said.

Since 2014, international allied forces, including the United States, have been stationed in Iraq under the pretext of sweeping IS, which has expanded its power in Iraq and Syria.

However, the outbreak of war between Israel and Palestinian militant Hamas in October last year raised anti-American sentiment in the Middle East and raised calls for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, and an agreement was reached in August.
