It's former Bolivian President Morales who is in a hurry to talk on the phone in the passenger seat.

I get out of the car, ask for help, and then I get back on in a hurry.

The vehicle carrying Morales leaves in a hurry and soon after, a gunshot is heard.

The windshield has two bullet holes.

The driver drives away from the scene, bleeding in the back of his head.

Morales posted a video taken on social media on his phone and said he was attacked by four hooded gunmen.

[Former President Evo Morales / Bolivia]: When I arrived, I got 14 shots in the car. As you can see. Right. It's 14 shots, and it's on the knight's head. The driver arrived bleeding, and was also shot in the arm. Fortunately, it didn't fit me, but I can see 14 shots from the vehicle.

Morales was attacked on Sunday morning while traveling to appear on a radio program.

Morales won a third term in office in 2005 but left his country in 2019 over allegations of presidential election fraud.

He returned home the following year with the help of his successor, President Luis Arce of the same party, but he has fallen out since last year and has recently been investigated by prosecutors on charges of sexual assault by minors.

Morales identified President Arce as the mastermind of the assassination.

[Former President of Bolivia]: The Minister of Government tried to use four women to accuse me, but all four refused. One of them confessed in detail that he was offered $50,000 if he accused me.

Morales is wielding influence as he seeks to return to power, where supporters have blocked major roads across the country in the last two weeks, staging intense protests.
