Russia strongly denies intervening in Georgia's general election as 'pro-Russian ruling party wins'

Russia has strongly denied allegations that it intervened in the Georgia general election, a former Soviet state won by a pro-Russian ruling party.

"I strongly deny such claims," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a briefing, adding that he did not intend to do so without interfering in Georgia's internal affairs.

"It is common for countries to accuse Russia of interfering in certain situations, but it is not true," Peskov said. "There was no interference, and those claims are completely groundless."

Rather, he pointed out that several public statements show that many forces and institutions in Europe tried to influence the outcome of Georgia's general election.

After Georgia's pro-Russian ruling party, "Georgia's Dream," won a majority of the vote in Georgia's general election on the 26th, Georgia President Salome Zuravishvili said, "We do not recognize the results of the election" and insisted on allegations of Russian intervention.

International election watchdogs, including the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), the International Republican Institute (IRI), a U.S. non-profit organization, and the National Institute for Democracy (NDI), and the European Union (EU) and the United States have also called for an investigation, saying there were misconduct in the election process.
