U.S. President Joe Biden has made a slip of the tongue calling supporters of Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump "trash."
At an event organized by a group of Hispanic voters, President Biden countered by citing Trump's earlier naming of Puerto Rico as a "garbage island."
In the process, he said, "A speaker at the Trump campaign called Puerto Rico a trash island, and Puerto Ricans are all good and respectable," adding, "The only trash floating outside in my view is his supporters."
Andrew Bates, a deputy White House spokesman, explained shortly after the remarks, saying, "President Biden called the hate speech during former President Trump's campaign "trash."
President Biden also said on social media, "It's a hate speech about Puerto Rico that Trump supporters uttered on the campaign trail," adding, "I couldn't think of any other words."
In response, Trump's camp issued a statement claiming that "Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are not the only ones who hate former President Trump," and that "they despise tens of millions of Americans who support Trump."
