According to the World Health Organization and WHO, the number of measles cases worldwide reached 13.3 million last year, up 20% from the previous year.
Among measles patients, 107,500 people died, down 8% from the previous year, but most were children under the age of five.
A number of measles infections have been reported in 57 countries, with outbreaks surging in Africa and the eastern Mediterranean, Europe, Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific.
The WHO noted that the number of measles cases has increased due to insufficient vaccination rates.
As of last year, 83% of children worldwide received the first dose of measles, but only 74% received the second dose.
The WHO emphasized that measles is the most contagious human virus and that the rate of vaccination by the second round must rise to 95%.
