A police investigation has announced that Brazil's former President Jair Bolsonaro has plotted a coup to prevent then-President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula Dásouva from taking office ahead of his retirement at the end of 2022.
On the 21st local time, Brazil's federal police concluded their investigation into the so-called "coup and violent damage to democratic and legalism" and summarized the results and published them on their website.
"We have submitted a report to the authorities requesting that 37 people be charged with coups and criminal organization," Brazil's police said.
Former President Bolsonaro is expected to have a impact on the prosecution.
This is because it means that the then sitting president, at the end of 2022, was involved in a plan to inflict harm on the soon-to-be-elected president.
It has already been known that former President Bolsonaro was accused of inciting the Jan. 8 presidential insurrection, but allegations that he was also involved in a plan to attack Lula directly have been suspicious so far.
Earlier, Brazilian police arrested soldiers and others who were carrying out security work in the G20 in Rio de Janeiro from the 18th to the 19th on charges of attempted assassination of the president, explaining, "They intended to kill then-President-elect Lula and Justice Alessandri Zimorais around December 15, 2022, using something like poison."
Police believe then-President Bolsonaro, who retired on December 31, 2022, was "fully aware" of the details of the conspiracy, including the poisoning. The planned terrorist attack on President
Lula is the 'green and yellow (green and yellow) dagger', Brazilian Federal Police explained.
Green and yellow are the colors of the Brazilian flag, a popular combination among conservative right-wing parties and supporters.
Brazil's federal police have also asked to prosecute big-name politicians and Bolsonaro's aides, including former Defense Minister Braga Netu, former Justice Minister Andersson Toges and Liberal Party leader Baumar Costa Netu.
"Some suspects incited the military to participate in the coup," Brazilian police said."The attempt to poison me and Vice President Geraudu Akiming failed, and here we are," Lula said at an event in Brasilia. "I am alive, so I should be most grateful now."
On the other hand, former President Bolsonaro said in a post on his X (X, former Twitter) and a telephone interview with a local columnist, "It is a creative investigation by the police," and claimed that "Justice Zimorice and others led the investigation and committed illegal acts by polluting testimony."
Former President Bolsonaro, who led Brazil between 2019 and 2022, is also accused of trying to smuggle jewelry on his return from a foreign trip with his wife while in office or forging COVID-19 vaccination certificates.
Earlier, Brazil's Supreme Election Court (STE) had deprived former President Bolsonaro of his right to run for election by 2030, holding him responsible for spreading fake news about the election system and undermining election fairness.
