Netanyahu "Suspension with Hezbollah"...gunfire stopped for the first time in more than a year

The Israeli security cabinet approved a ceasefire with pro-Iranian militant Hezbollah, stopping gunfire in Lebanon more than a year after the war in Gaza.

Netanyahu has said it is aimed at focusing on Iranian threats and isolating Hamas, but has conditioned Hezbollah to attack again at any time if it violates the agreement.

The cease-fire proposed by the United States to Israel and Hezbollah has been concluded.

With the Lebanese government and Hezbollah agreeing first, the Israeli security cabinet passed the ceasefire.

Netanyahu said the truce would further isolate Hamas in Gaza and allow it to focus on the Iranian threat.

At the same time, they put conditions on Hezbollah.

[Benyamin Netanyahu / Prime Minister of Israel] We will continue to maintain complete freedom of military action. If Hezbollah violates or rearmes the agreement, it will attack.]

The truce calls for a 60-day transition period and for both sides to begin negotiations to establish a border in the future.

During this period, Israeli forces were withdrawn from southern Lebanon and Hezbollah was withdrawn north of the Ritani River.

A U.S.-led management committee will monitor whether the cease-fire agreement is well implemented.

The war between Israel and Hamas, which began in Gaza in October last year, has spread to various parts of the Middle East over the past 13 months.

Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah have exchanged fierce battles with Israel as they support Hamas.

In the process, enormous human and material damage followed.

The agreement is said to be the first step in building peace in the Middle East, but there is also a lot of caution that optimism is early.

As Israel and Hezbollah reached a ceasefire agreement more than a year after the Middle East war began in earnest, attention is being paid to whether it will be a turning point on the path to peace.
