The New York Times (NYT) reported on the 3rd (local time) that the relationship between the United States and South Korea is in a difficult situation due to President Yoon Suk Yeol's declaration of martial law.

The New York Times evaluated that the martial law that President Yoon put forward for the reason of "the elimination of pro-North Korean anti-state forces" brought the biggest test in decades to the South Korea-U.S. alliance.

The NYT analyzed that the situation poses a challenge to the Biden administration as President Biden has strengthened military cooperation with South Korea by making democracy the core of foreign policy.

In particular, he pointed out that the declaration of martial law conflicts with the U.S. policy of promoting democracy, as South Korea has been considered a symbol of democracy.

The Biden administration said it had not been informed of the situation in advance and issued a statement saying it was "seriously concerned about the development of the situation."

The New York Times said there is a lot of speculation inside Washington about the timing of President Yoon's declaration of martial law.

President Biden was reported to have been briefed on the matter during his visit to Angola.

The newspaper said that President Yoon's low approval rating and aggressive moves by the opposition party are also related to anti-democratic forces in the U.S. and feared the impact on Korea-U.S. relations.
