A bomb installed on an electric scooter exploded, killing the commander of the Russian Army's Fire and Life Defense Protection Unit, Reuters and others reported.
Russian investigators say an explosive device exploded on a scooter parked at the entrance of a house on the morning of the 17th local time, killing Lt. Gen. Igor Kirillov, commander of the Russian Army's Fire and Life Protection Unit, and his deputy.
Russian chemical and biological defense units are active in the event of radioactive or biochemical weapons contamination.
Earlier on Monday, Ukrainian prosecutors charged Lieutenant General Kirilov with using chemical weapons banned in Ukraine.
Russia denies the allegations.
Britain put Lieutenant General Kirillov on the list of sanctions in October for using tear gas and suffocation agents on the battlefield in Ukraine.
