Slovak PM meets Putin ahead of gas cutoff

2024.12.23 AM 05:03
Slovakia's prime minister met with Russian President Vladimir Putin amid visible cuts to Russian gas supplies through Ukraine.

The Kremlin released a video of the two leaders shaking hands and talking on the 22nd local time, saying, "President Putin is meeting with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Pizzo, who visited Moscow on a working visit."

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a Telegram video by Russian state broadcaster Pavel Zarubin that discussions between the leaders of the two countries would focus on the issue of gas transport.

Earlier, Ukraine declared it would not extend its five-year contract for gas shipments, so Russian gas shipments via Ukraine are expected to stop on January 1 next year.

Slovakia, which signed a long-term contract with Russian state-owned energy company Gazprom, claims that not receiving gas through Ukraine will cost 220 million euros more in transportation and 330 billion won more in our money.
