Kim Taek-woo was elected as the new chairman of the Korean Medical Association... "We should stop discussing medical reform."

Kim Taek-woo, chairman of the National Council of Metropolitan Provincial Doctors, has been elected as the new chairman of the Korean Medical Association.

In a two-day runoff from yesterday to today, candidate Kim Taek-woo won 60.38 percent of the vote, beating candidate Joo Su-ho, who won 39.62 percent.

Kim said that the president should stop discussing the special committee on medical reform directly under the president and announcing the second implementation plan of the government's medical reform after the election.

In addition, he stressed that the government should come up with a master plan to see if medical school education is possible this year, with an increase of 1,500 medical students.

He explained that the government must submit a medical school education plan to answer the question of increasing medical schools in 2026.

Chairman Kim is classified as relatively centrist compared to other candidates, but he is expected to maintain a hard-line stance against the government for the time being as medical students and majors continue to push back against the policy of increasing medical schools.

Chairman Kim led the struggle against the government by serving as the chairman of the emergency committee of the Medical Association in the early days of the parliamentary conflict last year, and was suspended for three months for his involvement in the collective action of his major.
