Last month, the number of employed people aged 60 or older topped those in their 50s.

This is the first time since relevant statistics were compiled, and this trend is likely to continue for some time due to the aging population.

I'll connect with a reporter to hear more about it.

Reporter Park Ki-wan, how much more people over the age of 60 have been employed?

[Reporter]
Yes, the number of employed over 60 last month increased by 272,000 compared to a year ago.

The total number of people was 6,749,000, the highest ever since related statistics began to be compiled in 1982.

Among the total employed, the proportion of those aged 60 or older also increased to 23.4%, surpassing those in their 50s, and those aged 60 or older ranked first in the number of employed people in all age groups.

As of July 1982, when statistics began to be compiled, only 6% of those aged 60 or older were employed.

At that time, the number of employed people aged 60 or older was a quarter of those in their 20s, and the proportion of employed people nearly quadrupled in 42 years.

In the midst of this, the start-up of the elderly has also increased significantly.

As of July, 13,000 founders were over 60 years old, up 14.6% in a year.

Compared to the 1.5% increase in the total number of start-ups, it showed an overwhelming increase.

In particular, out of the 95,000 start-ups in July, 13,000 were over 60 years old, accounting for 14% of the total.

As of July, it was the first-ever record, and in terms of overall monthly, it was the second-highest ever after March.

The Small and Medium Venture Business Research Institute said that the number of elderly people in the labor market is bound to grow as the population ages, and that it is necessary to approach employment extension rather than retirement age extension as it is also intertwined with youth employment issues.

For this reason, discussions on continuing employment plans, such as extending the retirement age, are expected to begin in earnest in the future.
